Communications requirements for river cruises are special. There is little deck space and the vessel often maneuvers around obstructions or underneath low bridges. Large bulky antennas don’t work in this environment; in some cases the antenna even needs to retract below deck. Some cruises flip between LTE signals as they pass through countries, sometimes causing a loss of communication. Other more remote cruises have no access to LTE and are solely reliant on satellite. Connectivity is important not just for guest services but also for increased safety.
